Do you think it's true that...
the whole is greater than the sum of its parts?

I think it’s especially true in the visual arts, where the eye will often make its own visual connections to successfully resolve or enrich an image.

Recent Discovery...
The Oceanside Art Museum just north of San Diego! On a recent visit, our family group was rewarded with an extensive exhibit of Italian artist Italo Scanga’s assemblages - an ingenious example of the whole being greater than its parts. Old machine parts and other castoffs successfully transitioned to sculpture.

Also on exhibit was a retrospective exhibit of Francoise Gilot’s paintings and collages, as well as Beatrice Wood’s ceramics.

“Marked” is a continuing exploration of suspension series, where I’m led (and lead the viewer) into enigmatic, unlikely places!

I just completed my latest addition to the suspension series. “Conundrum” will pull you into mysterious depths. I continue to find oilsticks a fascinating and rich medium in which to work.

Newsy Bits
The DMQ Review publishes online well-known poets’ work “illustrated” or evoked by a painter’s images. For their Summer issue, several of my paintings were chosen to accompany the verses. Take a look at their website. My painting “Crossings” appears in Crussell Gallery’s “International Survey” publication currently available at 15% off from their website.

I’d love to hear from you at aida@aidaschneider.com.

Until next time have a glorious Autumn!

Inspiration

What Is It? How Does One Get It?

Sometimes, I might find I have more to say about one of my previous ideas. Recently as I reviewed a series I painted three or four years ago exploring the act or state of suspending various shapes, objects or letters. I found myself excited by a flow of new possibilities and a need for further development.  My new exploration, below, yielded a leaner, subdued palette which infuses “Suspensions” with enigma and a certain disorientation.

NEWSY BITS:

END OF ONE SHOW . . .

The month-long show at Desert Art Collection closed mid-April ending in a big commission. A gallery client liked one of the exhibited pieces, but wanted it in different dimensions and quite a bit bigger. I was happy to oblige with “Winds of Change Three Suns”.

Also at the Desert Art Collection is an ongoing exhibit. I stopped by and took a little video of it.

March Newsletter

Greetings...

to you who've expressed interest in my art -  this newsletter is for you! I've entered the 21st century and have decided to start sending occasional email newsletters. In this and future mailings, I'll tell you about the latest paintings, shows, ideas, techniques.

On exhibit now . . .

By the time you read this edition, my annual exhibit at Desert Art Collection in Palm Desert will have opened on March 20. "We Are What We Write" runs through April 12.

Inspiration . . .

Those of you who have followed and collected my art through the years will know that a continuing thread in my paintings is a fascination with ancient cultures as reflected in their writings. Scratched or painted on stone, brushed onto paper, or baked onto ceramic tile, these visual signals are almost as good a clue to a people as the content of these messages.

"Our Stories" 48x36

"Our Stories" above, is the latest in the continuing series “Ancient Rituals/New Traces”. This idea explores the visual connection of shapes in nature - rocks, shells - to letter shapes adopted and adapted to written communication.

"Signature" 20x20

Being experimental in my art, I've explored this idea in various media such as watercolors, pastel, collage and ceramics. But for the last 10 years, oil sticks on panel have been my medium of choice, allowing a direct and gestural technique. "Signature" displays my unusual approach of painting/drawing with oil sticks with my hands only.  My palm print  is my "signature" or characteristic "brush work".

I'd love to hear from you!

Email me at aida@aidaschneider.com or contact my studio directly (909)794-4487. You may also browse my online gallery at aidaschneider.com.

Or in person (best of all) at the opening reception Thursday, April 7, 5-8, Desert Art Collection, 45-350 San Luis Rey Avenue, Palm Desert.

Sausalito Art Festival

Labor Day Weekend 2010 marked the much celebrated Sausalito Art Festival's 58th year. This top rated festival afforded 200+ national and some international artists the opportunity to display and sell their art to a select audience in the beautiful Marin County location.

A variety of fabulous live music played all day long on 2 (widely spaced) stages.

I've been fortunate enough to do this three-day event several times over the years. This year, I understand attendance set new highs. That was certainly true for me judging by the enthusiastic visitors to my booth!
